Dom,
Here is that is off the main tourist trail. Here is further south. A better option might be . Easy to get to, many other islands close by. I suggest you go to and then start your search. There are many options around Krabi at affordable prices. If one is too quiet, choose another. Any travel shop in Krabi will be able to find something in your budget that is less developed. Good luck with your planning.

Hi Dom,

I really liked the big island of Ko Chang in the Trat Province. It's not far from Bangkok so that's a plus and if you head to the far beach, it's quite lovely. There are some beautiful beaches you can visit that are pretty overpopulated but as far as just hanging out on a daily basis, the far beach is low key and laid back. Lots of hippies but a cool vibe and interesting restaurants. Ko Samet has the loveliest beaches and it's quiet during the week, the thai come to spend their weekends there.
Malaysia's beaches have a bit of an issue with jelly fish so although they are nice, it's touch and go.
Also, fave beach are is probably on Railay Beach. Great snorkelling, monkeys all over the place and easily reached from Krabi town.

Have a great time
Loraine

Hi all,

I'm looking to spend time at a relaxing beach type place in Thailand. Have you found any gems (islands or mainland) that are not too overdeveloped but will still have useful amenities like restaurants, accommodation etc? Or in Malaysia for that matter?

Thanks,

Dom

If you want to stay where is not too far from BKK , you can stay at Koh Chang like Loraine recommended and Koh Kood which is also in Trat province. In case you want to stay far away from BKK, you should you to Koh Lipe in Satul. If you stay here you can go to Langawi in Malaysia. Or Krabi where is there are not crowed of people like Phuket. Have a Nice Trip.
