Setting up tax code and bank account in Oz

Hi,

The bank account might be possible (Citibank used to have an expensive one that you could set up before arriving), but the tax file number has to be sorted after arrival. It takes less than an hour though Basically you could sort all of this within one afternoon in Sydney's city centre.

Thanks for your advise i will just wait and set both up when i arrive. Any idea where i would need to set up the tax file number?

Yes, at the ATO (Australian Tax Office). There's a standard pack of papers you have to fill in (don't worry, it's pretty short) which they have lying around there. If I'm not mistaken the office in Sydney is still at Centrepoint (think that's the name), which is basically right under the tall tower with the revolving restaurant, pretty much dead in the centre of Sydney. You can't really miss it.

There's other tax offices around of course, and if you're arriving in a different city, a search on should reveal the nearest office.

Actually, browsing around that site just now I noticed it is possible to fill in an application online! You can do so . The only thing I'm not sure about is if you will have all the details you need to fill it in online. They write:

Applying for a TFN should take about 20 minutes. You will be asked to enter details including your passport or travel document number, a postal address in Australia where your TFN can be sent, your legal name and other names you use or have used and contact details for yourself or your preferred contact person.

But if you have an address you can use, then it seems like it might be worth giving a shot. Let us know if you do manage to do so, as it would be useful info to have for others asking about it!
