Hi, like I said I will be in Bali on the 16th but staying until the 17th (Dec). So:
I would highly recommend visiting Bromo and Borobudur - they were the highlights of my 2-week trip to Indonesia. I spent a week in Java and a week in Bali, and while Bali is the more relaxed of the 2 islands, Java has the more interesting sights in my opinion. A 2 day/1 night trip from Bali could work but flying out of Yogyakarta could be a good option too because then you could get to see Prambanan, which is another interesting temple complex.
I believe there is some good surfing from one of the islands off Java, but I'm not sure of the exact location.
