If I'm not mistaken, any non-essential travel to Bangkok should now be avoided, so I'd probably head straight south if I were you, then do Bangkok on the way back if possible?
Sam I Am does have good advice. Avoid Bangkok now if possible. However my friend flew out of Bangkok yesterday and said the city itself is fine and the airports are open. I am in Phnom Penh right now with my parents and they are scheduled to fly to Bangkok Saturday in order to head back to the states Sunday and thus far, nothing has had to be altered. Maybe check the embassy website in Thai land to see what they say.
Flights in and out of Swampy are running normal. Don Mueang is closed down.
