first time solo traveller to aus! where is best to start?

I'm 22 and going to Australia either in February or April next year, and i was wondering if anyone else is going and just wanted as much advice as i can get!
I'm a bit worried of traveling by myself but I am determined to go!
I thought about starting in Sydney or Melbourne, which ever works out cheapest! And is Melbourne worth a visit? Just wondering what there is to see and do!
I am also heading over to America after, are there many people heading that way either?
Literally cant wait to leave!
Looking forward to any advice guys! Or any travel stories! x

Hi

I shall be flying out from Heathrow to Melbourne on monday and should hopefully land on 4th January after a 1 night stop over in Kuala Lumpur! I belive you should start off in Melbourne this is because its summer in February and also its Australia's 2nd biggest city! I have been reading up alot about Melbourne and there seems to be alot to see/do there especially if your into sport because they host the tennis, grand prix and also theres cricket at the MCG! Melbourne seems to have a very european feel about it with lots of cafe's and also has the biggest tram network in the world!
Im also travelling by myself and im not really that worried because I know you will meet other travellers in the hostels you stay at by just saying "HI" to them in common room or in your dorm room!
How long do you plan on travelling Australia for then? Do you have a working holiday visa so you can work and fund the rest of your trip?
I also want to visit America after i have done Australia and maybe New Zealand! America looks and sounds so amazing and i just want to get in a car and travel all around it doing a classic American road trip! Would you be just travelling America or also working as you go along?

Hellooo.

I'm currently in Melbourne till the 21st of January. Heading up to SEA between Jan 21st -- mid March, after SEA heading back down to Oz.
You shouldn't be worried about traveling alone, one of the best experiences you will ever have.
Choosing your starting point really depends on how you want to see Oz and also the month you plan on coming over.
Any idea on the dates you want to backpack? And are you planning to backpack the entire east coast?

I'm flying into Melbourne on the 5th Feb and then working my way east...that is all that is planned! very excited. Send me a message if you're out there around the same time, would be great to meet new people! Catherine x

Its great to hear that someone might be going to america aswell! Ive been before traveling, but only for 3 weeks, and that wasnt nearly enough to see everything i wanted to!
How long are you traveling for sam? and have an amazing time! jealous your going to be there in 4 days!

I'm thinking about getting a work visa, but not sure as yet, need to see whether i have enough time to get jobs to make it worth it! but only in aus, i wouldnt bother in america about working i think, because it seems harder to get a work visa there

I'm planning to start in the south and work my way up the east coast as the temp drops! want to make the most of the nice weather!

well im trying to decide dates, either feb after my graduation or in april after my birthday! dunno whether i want to be on my own for my birthday!!

better get on with my decision making!! lol

Emma i was also thinking about getting that bus pass! would be good to hear from someone who has used it, and whether they are worth it, or just buying singles?

I have not got any set plans on how long I will be out there but I hope I will stay for about a year before moving on to other countires! Yeh i plan on working in Australia but if I go to America I will most properly just travel and not work but I really want to work in a ski resort! Have you decided on what dates you want to go yet and also are you getting a return flight or just one way?

Sam, let me know if you want to meet up, go out for some drinks or something. i was talking to a security guard on new years and he told me about a club in melbourne that is most famous for how many backpackers go there. its called the Nottinghill. i have yet to go but plan on going soon. it's on Ferntree Gully Road.

Kate, sounds like you have the right idea starting in the south and working your way up north. The best time to be in Queensland is around march, Jan-Feb are the hottest months up there. March is also less expensive seeing as it is not holiday season for all the aussies! bus passes can be a good idea but also buying your own car when you get here can be an even better plan. just to have to freedom of driving anywhere you want on the coast. you can pick up any decent car for around 1,000-2,000 AUD. Let me know if you go in march/april though because thats when ill be doing the caines-melbourne trip.

Emma, we will have to make some plans in thailand! where are you staying the majority of the time?
