Heading to Australia Feb 2012,..... anybody else?

Heeeeey !

Hi!

Im also travelling to Melbourne and im landing on the 4th January! I too want to find work once im out there so I can fund the rest of my travels up the east coast! I think starting in Melbourne will be best to find a job because most travellers seem to travel stright to sydney to find a job! Im most properly going to go for the casual bar work or just work for a hostel so I dont have to pay for my bed =)!!

Hey Sam!

Yeh, my thoughts were the same, just fingers crossed finding a job will be simple enough!. Is your plan to just basically turn up and start finding work as soon as your there? or will you look at ways of applyign before?.

I'm still thinking of joining a starter package with a company that sort out accomodation, jobs and tax file numbers when you arrive. Not sure whether its worth it though :S.

Working for a hostel is a good idea, I feel like I'm completely unprepared though! haha. My plan is very similar after ive stopped working i want to travel up the east coast, and then travel a bit of asia on the way back if my pennies will stretch far enough!.

So much to think about!

Perth at the moment has a high percentage of vacant casual positions,in fact its hard to get staff in Perth anywhere.

Trouble is Perth is very expensive because of the so called mining boom and its useless public transport system lets it down big time.

I have lived in Perth for 30 years ( came here and never left) and have noticed an ever increasing amount of travellers coming to Perth for the work over the past 3 years.Years ago hardly any came because of the lure of the East coast jobs/sights.

Easy step back to Asia from Perth with it being closer to parts of Asia than Sydney and with the cheapest flight to Asia in OZ.

May be a bit hot for you in Feb though as this is the hottest month always being around 30-39 degrees during the day,but if beach is your thing then its great if you can find a bus lol.

I live quite close to Northbridge where most of the backpacker accommodation is and meeting people/other travellers in Perth is easy because the main entertainment area of Perth is Northbridge for locals as well as travellers.

Good luck and enjoy.

I don't have a job yet I will just look for casual work once I get out there and join onto the agency to find some work! I hope its not to hard to find a job once I get out there but im sure there are employers looking for travellers for casual work!
I was also thinking about doing a starter pack with Ozintro in Sydney but then i decided to start in Melbourne because i think it will be easier to find a job there and also i enjoy sports and Melbourne host alot of sporting events!
I really want to head over to Asia aswell before heading home! What countries do you have in mind in Asia? Personally I really like the look of Thailand and Vietnam!

Hi Donna

My friend and I are travelling Oz in Feb, we fly to Melbourne from Singapore on the 27th of February.

We wont be working just travelling around, heading to Sydney after Melbourne and then up the east coast, so if you find your self travelling at the same time we can pass on some helpful advice.

Have a great time

Aby

Well I've booked a flight from Sydney to Bangkok flying the 8th July, I have 5 weeks to travel then before I need to be back in the UK. I have been asia previosly but want to visit places I didint have time to last time. I am planning on visiting Vietnam again but the north as I only was able to stay around ho chi minh city last time. Also cambodia, Siem Reap is a must see there for the temples and then hoping to catch a boat to visit the islands and make my way back up to bangkok, if everything goes to plan that is!. If you do decide to go let me know and I'll let you know what I thought were the best places to go, there are some that arent as good as they are hyped up to be I thought.

Hi Aby,

Any advise would be great let me know when your in Melbourne. I've been looking into hostels for Melbourne and I've seen really good reviews for "the ritx for backpackers" and "habitat HQ" which seem affordable and friendly.

I think I might sack off paying an extra few hundred to go with a company as long as a I can find a sociable hostel to check into. Im planning to travel the east coast too but probably not until i earn enough money which may be around April.

Very excited though =]

Hey donna,

My plans are very simular to yours, heading to Mellbourne at the beginning of March. Hoping to find work there and then make my way up the east coast to Cains. I have the years working visa. Just looking at flights will be booking a flight in the next few days.

I've heard Melbourne is a good place to find casual work, I'm hoping to find bar work.

Does anyone know if you need to a RSA course to work in bar there. I've looked and found one I can do online but will also need to do a course when I get there.

I've been thinking of doing a starter pack but again am in the same dileima as yourself if its worth the money. So much to consider lol x

Hi littleangie,

I know there is so much to think about!, I think starting off in Melbourne will be a good spot, plus its an easy way to travel up the east coast without having to backtrack. What is this RSA course? I have never heard about it before?.

Ive just started making a list of what I need to get and the one thing that worries me is sorting out a tax file number? I know if you go with one of the starter packs they organise it for you. Also I dont know whats best sim card wise for a mobile phone so if anyone know whats simcards are best to use please let me know!.
