Lonely planet books

Hi

Do they have libraries where you are? Try and sample all available or can be transferred there before purchasing. What are the reviews like on Amazon (and it is probably too early to assess the 2012 edition).

Do you need a printed guide book? If a web guide might do, check out . They have the best guides to South East Asia in my opinion. You can download their app if you have an iPhone.

And of course, we have our own, community created guide to as well to read through.

when I travel I usually surf the net for info before I go and copy and paste it onto A4 then print it out

As far as I'm concerned, Lonely Planet books are ancient history. Travelfish is current info because they have people in these countries (SE Asia only) that now blog constantly as well as those downloadable area guides. Google Map is another excellent source - just enter a street address that's complete with city name and country. Printed material that's been sitting on bookstore shelves for several months has to be out of date.

I would make the use of the library if you have a local one in your region, it gives you the opportunity to sample lonely planet, rough guides and other guidebooks before you buy and see which you prefer and which would complement your type of travel more.

Also online if a great tool to do your research pre-travel but it's always nice to have a guidebook with you to refer too on the road on when your unable to access a computer.

I went to Iceland recently and I found that both Lonely Planet and the Rough Guide were useful. I would have missed some cool stuff If I only had one of them.

Hey, I've been using my lonely planet guide in Australia. The maps are pretty good but admittedly some of the info is out of date. If you're looking for completely up to date info the net is probably your best bet but I have also found my lonely planet guide useful for walking tours, things to do etc. Maybe you could pick up a cheap 2nd hand copy of a Thialand Lonely Planet guide somewhere?
