Sweden

Hello
I am going to be driving up the east coast of Sweden and on up the arctic circle. What are the roads like are they single roads dual or motorway would it be easy to clock up 500 miles a day in late September early October.Any info would be a help thank you

Roads are mostly one lane each way; good quality, and relatively empty. But also expect exceedingly long stretches (many, many kilometers at a time) where roadworks are happening, and the road quality deteriorates to loose gravel, with local drivers racing over it relatively swiftly, but you not feeling comfortable at more than 30 km/h or so. Given that, 500 miles is technically feasible for a single day, but it's very exhausting, and so probably not something you can do for multiple days in a row. Having done a similar drive once (around 650 miles, actually; Stockholm to Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park in Norway, sharing between three drivers), I'd never do it again. That was also in early August, so it was still somewhat light when we arrived late at night. You won't get that in late September, and the risk of a reindeer on the road is not negligible, so I'd definitely not drive on after nightfall.

It's totally gorgeous up north, though, so well worth it. If you have the choice at all, make certain not to miss the Lofoten in Norway. Real pointy mountains, straight out of a fantasy book.

Thank you for your reply,
