Planning my SE Asia trip, really need help.

Hey,

hi Jenny,it seems you want to do and see a lot in seventy five odd days.well with a bit of planning it is possible.id suggest doing ayyuthaya and kanchanaburi when you land in Bangkok or fly from bkk to phuket first thing.you cud also go to samui with Bangkok airways direct. but if u want to go all these places then ithink u shud make bkk the centreand go in either direction.likewise u cud board an overnight train to chiang mai from hualomphong train station in bkk or catch one of the many flights.train is really cheap.everytime u come to bkk u cud spend a day or 2 in the capital and do bkk.it all depends on the time and energy u have and the kind of budget u are on.alternatively u cud go straight to Cambodia and Vietnam and do Thailand on your return.for me this wud be to tiring.

Hey Jenny
You have to realise it takes a long time to travel around SE Asia. Most buses and trains are rarely ever on time, departing or arriving. Also several of these places, especially in Thailand, aren't on the main backpacker route so have limited departures per day, sometimes not even every day.
I think you need to reduce the amount of locations or else, like #2 said, you will be exhausted! If I can make out all the stops properly, it seems you have around 40 locations in 2.5 months. I traveled SE Asia for 5.5 months last year and managed to hit around 45 locations. I just about fit them in. I'd recommend you cut the list down to around 20 locations as you're trying to take too much on and won't be able to enjoy the places you're seeing.
O.J.

Another way to approach this might be to stop worrying about specific day-to-day movement details and figure it out as you go. You're undoubtedly going to fall in love with some places and want to stay longer, while other places just won't live up to expectations so you move on sooner.

There might be some places where you want travel arrangements worked out in advance, but that will be rare. It's a lot easier than you realize to firm up movement plans on the spot, you'll discover transport options that aren't even mentioned on the internet.

When you meet other travellers you're going to find other movement and destination options that you've never even heard of too.

Have fun and good luck.

Cheers,
Terry

Hey!

Yeah I know I am crazy over thinking & planning this.
A massive part of me wants to just arrive in Bangkok & see what happens, I want to go with the flow meet other people see what they recommend, do what they might be doing that day & carry on like that I just wanted a kind of rough guide to places I did want to see (so I wasn't wandering around aimlessly or wasting loads of time/money in some places when I could do more)

in my case iplan to change planes in bkk and go to chiang mai and then plan onwards

You're going backpacking Jenny, not planning an expedition to the moon... ;-)

Relax. Have fun.

Cheers,
Terry

Yeah I'd give in to your desire to arrive in bkk and wing it.

You have a nice list of objectives, if you treat that as a guide and inspiration rather than a tick list you'll have fun. Unless you have some items which are must-do on this particular trip?

I've decided to make a smaller kind of inspiration list & wing it from there.
I really want to do the lantern festival as I'll be there around the time so going to have to figure out getting to there from where ever I am the week they release the dates.
