Solo Traveller wanting advice

Hi

Hi Laura

Have been in your same situation, back in Jan 2012 I flew to Sydney, right in the deep end, the furthest I been was Ibiza with mates, and nothing as far as Oz on my own. I was excited and nervous like yourself.

Soon as I got to the hostel, and booked in I felt calmer knowing I had accommodation booked ahead. I didn't expect to make friends so quick, but everyone was really friendly, and most are in the exactly same situation as yourself. After a week or so of getting to know your suroundings, its like a home from home...well a bit hotter!

Depends how quickly you need to work I'd suggest applying as soon as you can (if you need the money that is) as so many people are looking for work. But you will eventually get the break, especially as I presume You have previous experience.

Anyway You'll have an awesome time, planning on doing the East coast?

Im hoping to Head back in September but do another Route

Have fun!

Hiya!

Thank you for your response! I wanted to go it alone and just get there and find accommodation but I'm looking at booking through STA and Bunac who'll help with all the "important" stuff such as getting a job and finding somewhere to kip! It's £350 but I'd rather pay that and have someone I can go to if I need help.

I'm hoping to take quite a bit of money with me but I'll take your advise and get applying as soon as I get there.

I'm so excited! How long was you there for?

Thanks again!! xx

Hi Laura,

. The only difference will be the timing but hopefully you'll find some people to connect with before you go.

Cheers,
Kellie

P.S. Welcome to Travellerspoint!

It's up to you, but I wouldn't waste money on STA. Everything can be easily done yourself as long as you know what you need to take care of, this website http://www.australia.com/whv-checklist-uk.aspx offers an example of a check-list you can use to make sure you don't miss anything.

Getting hostels is simple, just head to hostelbookers or hostelworld and pick your dates and destination and choose your hostel.
For Jobs, Gumtree will be your friend, plus you could join recruitment agencies in the cities specialising on what you want to do.
Travelling: plenty of choices, Coach company Greyhound..which I used a lot, very reasonable and quite regular with many destinations on route. theres also Premier, not sure what theyre like though, You can also rent/buy a car/campervan or have a ride share with friends you'll meet in hostels.

Once you get used to it, its all pretty straightforward.

I was there for just under a year, spent 5 months in Sydney working for 3 months, (spent way to much in the first couple of months, be careful as you don't realise how quickly your money gets drained, I was going out way to much mind) then travelled for 3 months up to Cairns. Then did my 90 days for a second visa on a farm near Brisbane. Before heading to NZ for a month then Thailand for a few weeks. Best time ever, hence why I want to go back

Thank you Kellie , I'll have a look into that!

I'm so excited! I've booked now! Going 19th January 2015! I've paid that little bit extra and gone through STA just so I have some reassurance that someone's "got my back" so to speak hAha!

That sounds like you had an awesome trip! I'd love to visit NZ again and stay longer and also Thailand is massively up there with where I NEED to go!

Thank you for your advice ? x

Gooner_ali Where abouts did you do your regional work? I fly out in August and want to do my 88days as soon as possible! Any help/advice would be great!

Thanks!

Hey HG92

I did my regional work in a place called Dalby, I have farming background though, So I did a lot of tractor driving etc. It depends on our experience. Remember that it doesnt have to be fruit picking. there are other jobs you can do, I dont know them off the top of my head, but a google search on it will help. If you want to do fruit picking look at which fruits are in season and for which region.

Hope that helps a bit
