Hi,
OK, I'm not saying what we did was perfect or even close to optimum but I only have a limited time for holidays because of work. In July 2012 we spent three weeks in Japan and Korea; Tokyo, Hakone (Lake Ashi), Kawaguchico (Mt Fuji), Kyoto, Horoshima and then the ferry from Shimonoseki to Busan, Seoul (DMZ), Sokcho (Seoraksan National Park) and back to Seoul. We loved both countries, had a great time and feel we saw as much as we ought to have done.
Similarly we have organised a trip to China this July for two weeks; starting in Beijing (Great Wall, Forbidden Palace), Xian (Terracota Warriors), Chengdu (pandas), a ferry cruise down the Yangtze (the lesser three gorges) and a day or two at the end in Shanghai. We expect to be busy and tired each day but we think it's perfectly doable and gives us a good experience of China.
Looking at your itinerary, it looks fine to me.
Hi,
How did you find japan?
and what did you do between Busan and Seoul, or did you just travel directly to Seoul? your trip sounds pretty much in line with what mine is, tokyo (Nikko - Hakone) and kyoto hiroshima, miyajima, and himeji castle and flying out of osaka.
One of the things i'm not completely sure with china is how to incorporate Shanghai, as i go into beijing and i've sort of streamlind my route through the country and i'm then going in to vietnam however i am goiing back up to shanghai and back down to hong kong at the mo just because the diistances are so big! no easy way to fit it in to my route
Have fun in china!
Jack
Hi Jack
For Hakone research the Hakone Three-Day Pass which is a transport ticket to and from Tokyo for all (absolutely everything) transport to, around and back from Hakone. And you can get to Kawaguchico with it too. Of all the places in Japan, we found Horoshima the best; our accommodation was the Suntour right next to the Peace Park which was thought-provoking but fascinating and we went to Miyajima too and climbed to the top of Mt Missen and mingled with the deer in the town centre.
In Korea we docked at Busan port and found our way to our hostel at Gangsomething Beach and had a couple of nights there and then we caught a bus straight up to Seoul (about 4 hours) and had about three nights there, a bus to Sokcho and two nights there and then back to Seoul for two more nights. In Seoul a trip to the DMZ is a must - photographing the North Korea guards spying through their binoculars on us was brilliant - like the Cold War all over again. We sorted out our trip there with USO in Seoul. And in Sokcho we spent a very sweaty day climbing Ulsanbawi in the National Park.
For China, our inward flight arrives in Beijing and our return flies out of Shanghai so the route was quite easy. We're getting around by overnight trains mainly which saves a night's accommodation cost. To buy tickets, see China DIY Travel, a company which, for a small fee, will buy your train tickets in China for you.
Enjoy your trip!
