Just got the best news of my life, my boss is sending me to a convention that is being hosted in November, completely paid for, all I have to pay for is the hotel stay. So since this is a forum of well traveled people, would anyone bne willing to suggest cheap places to stay besides a youth hostel. I unfortunately will be presenting so I will be traveling with quite a lot of expensive gear. So to my disdain, I will have to get a hotel room.
Have a look at travelodge.co.uk - they can have some good deals if you book early, and they have a lot of hotels so probably some choices near where you want to be.
For good English beer, find a j D Wetherspoon's pub. They have good real ale and, although a chain, their prices are usually considerably less than tied houses or free houses. There's one about 2km from Tobacco Dock, a pleasant 30 minute walk across Tower Bridge to the south bank - The Pommeler's Rest.
Since you'll also be close to the tube line, note that the museums in London are all (I think) free. The National Gallery in Trafalgar Square is excellent as is the British Museum in Russell Square and the National History and Science Museums in Kensington.
If you have a free day, it is possible to walk from Tower Hill tube station (which you can walk to from Tobacco Dock in ten minutes) and cover the great sights - The Tower of London, Tower Bridge, HMS Belfast, St Paul's Cathedral, The Embankment, Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace, Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall and Downing Street, Westminster Abbey and The Houses of Parliament.
And if you really want to experience some great British culture, have a Saturday afternoon at a football match - Chelsea, Arsenal, West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur are all likely to be in the Premier League next season and play home matches in London; Crystal Palace and Queen's Park Rangers do too but they may not be up there next season but might be replaced by Brentford and/or Watford. Tickets for the big clubs can be difficult to get hold of and the fixture list won't be out until July but it'll be well worth the experience!

Check out a pub called scaredy cat town if you can - it's a hidden bar in the basement of a breakfast club. You have to ask to see the mayor and they take you through a fridge downstairs. Wicked cocktails, but it's pricey.
Leicester square, covent garden, and chinatown are well worth a visit as well - these are easily walkable from / around Westminster, and can be done from tower hill, if you don't mind a lot of walking and a long day. You'll find good pubs pretty much anywhere you go, but Shoreditch is an area that's quite popular right now.
There are also a lot of free walking tours (tips-based) including Jack the Ripper, and different areas (south bank / south wark). If you google, you should find 3 different companies doing them on different schedules and should be able to find the one that you might want on a day that's available for you.
