There are various bus companies offering bus passes to do this - naked bus, magic bus, kiwi experience, some are doing tours others just bus point to point.
But it's a lot of hours on the road; there is no nice motorway network and the terrain is not easy for road building.
In South Island you could route either via Christchurch (which is a bit of a bomb site still after the earthquake) and Kaikoura or the west coast glaciers Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier and then to Nelson where you could detour to Abel Tasman National Park.
Either route will get you to Picton for a ferry to Wellington which is well worth seeing.
Then your most probable route through north Island is to Taupo and Rotorua then on to Auckland, and with only a short time that's probably your best bet.
