TFN and bank account help down under!

Foxy1991 has indicated that this thread is about Sydney

After reading a few bits and pieces about life down under something that has continuously popped up is a Tax File Number, I am aware of what a TFN is but what I am unaware about is how to go about getting one, is it something that can be sorted prior to arriving in Australia or does it need to be sorted once I am in the country?

You can only get one once you've arrived in the country. Once you do, fill in the form . (See for a bit more information about things.)

Another question I have is how do I go about opening a bank account, and can it be done before I enter the country, as I would much rather have it all sorted before I leave the UK so its one less thing to do when I arrive? I have read about the different banks and their charges and have decided to go with Commonwealth as they seem the most popular bank in Australia, however this is not set in stone if anyone has anything to say about them,

Some banks allow you to open a bank account beforehand, though you'll still need to show up in person at a bank branch once you're in Australia to confirm your identification. The only real benefit from opening an account beforehand is that you'll have your debit card waiting for you at that bank branch, rather than having to have it sent to your hostel. Commonwealth seems to offer this service, with information . (As a backpacker, it doesn't matter much which bank you go with (as long as they're one of the big ones with a good network of ATMs), they're virtually indistinguishable, with the only distinguishing characteristic sometimes being that certain banks have a completely no-fee account type if you can plan ahead well enough to limit your withdrawals per month to just 4 or 5. No ideas which (if any) banks currently offer such an account.)
