Travel in Colombia

What safety issues should an American woman take into consideration when traveling in Colombia? Thanks for any and all input!

Colombia is not unique in the slightest. Use the very same common sense and street smarts that you would in any Central/South American country/city.

It's an absolutely fabulous country - my present favourite in South America - so believe me you're going to have a gas.

Have fun.

Cheers,
Terry

PS Being American is immaterial.

Thanks Terry,

I have never traveled to South America before and I have a friend who keeps inviting me to come visit him there. But I am worried about traveling on public transit from the airport to my final destination, which would be a slight journey. Would you recommend only traveling and getting out during the day time. I have heard that the nightlife in Medellin is pretty good?

Thanks,

Joanna

I've been all over Colombia and I have never travelled from an international airport to anywhere on a public bus - I've simply grabbed a taxi and gone directly to my hotel/hostel.

Colombia is like any Latin country, use your common sense and street smarts and local knowledge to decide what is and isn't safe - especially at night.

Medellin rocks.

Have fun.

Cheers,
Terry

Hi Joanna,

I lived for 3 years in South-America and I am a tour-leader in Colombia!
To travel from the airport to a different location is really not that hard with public transport. If you arrive in Bogota; I would recommend taking a taxi to the busterminal. From there all busses that go everywhere in Colombia and they leave very frequent. Even traveling at night is no problem at all!

Depending on the time you arrive and how good your Spanish is; you might consider first going to a hostel in Bogota to acclimatize and from there keep going the next day all refreshed!
There is a new airline in Colombia that is called and it offers really cheap tickets to a lot of places in Colombia. You light consider this.....
Due to the 3 mountain ranges it sometimes takes a lot of time to go by bus!

Let me know your itinerary or any other questions! I'll be happy to help!

Tom
