can you help me find cheap hotel in Hanoi

Have you checked the page here on TP? If you do an availability search you'll also see the prices per private, next to the dorm pricing.

Louis,
After you have selected a few hotels/hostels that interest you, use 'tripadvisor' to see what others thought of that hotel. I stayed at several hotels in the old quarter. The Real Darling Cafe, 33 Hang Quat St. Nothing special, basic room at $7/nite. Good location, small, decent cafe, but don't recommend it. I also stayed at Wing Hotel, Hang Non St. Easy walk from Darling Cafe. Better room, OK food, $8/nite single. There are so many within walking distance of Hoan Kiem Lake that I would not pre-book anything. Make your list, then have your taxi drop you at your first choice. If you like it, great, problem solved. If not, walk to the many hotel options closeby. Good luck with your planning.

I stay at the Especen Hotel on Tho Xuong St. - very clean and excellent location. No breakfast here, but plenty of places to eat in the area. This hotel is just a few blocks from the stop where the Vietnam Air minibus drops you downtown. All prices here from $8. to about $25. for a huge room w/balcony.

The Vietnamese Dong is now at 19,100 to the USD, and prices are set to rise due to the recent devaluation. Prices in Hanoi tend to be a little higher than elsewhere in the country. Hoi An is a good place for bargains - lower hotel and restaurant prices generally. (I pay $20. in Hanoi and $15. in Hoi An for a room)
