Flights

With airlines going under more and more often and flight prices varying more than the cost of a beer and a bed, would Travellerspoint ever consider having a forum dedicated to just flights, airport experiences, comparisons of different airlines and their services (so often excellent and the total lack of) and prices, which one day are £1 one way, the next day £100 for the same trip on the same airline from the same airport at the same time, recommendations of who to use and who to avoid, long term memories both good and bad, the service on board (again top dog, or the so often mentioned grumpy steward/ess). The list is endless.
Just a thought.
Thanx

Any comments?

I'm sure we'd consider it, but we consider a LOT of ideas, and sadly can only ever actually implement a small percentage of them. Another idea is to start putting up individual wiki guides about airlines. These would be easier to keep up to date over a longer period, and probably much more useful for the casual browser of TP in terms of finding.

OK thanks

Hmm, I think this idea has a bit of merit for a new forum. Since topics really don't fall in any of our current forums, they would just end up in General Talk. Mostly suggestions for new forums cause a problem with people not knowing where to post the topic. But that might not be such a problem in this case.

I think the real question is can we get enough activity to make it truly of interest to people? And what other similar topics might be suggested? Boats, Trains, etc.. can all also be considered. In which case, maybe a broader, "Transportation" forum would prove more active? Did someone suggest that earlier already?

Seems it might be a go-er then?
As you are aware, I have a small travel agency and flights are my thing. I am aware of the forum rules on specific adverts and spam, so don't worry. But I could put fwd some good tips on do's and don'ts.
How about a trial run - eh?

I remember when we decided to create the 'Travel Gear' forum, we felt that there was enough traffic for it because 'General Talk' had a lot of threads about backpacks, suitcases and stuff. The traffic in GT for those topics called for it. Looking at transportation-related threads in 'General Talk', I'm not sure if we could get enough traffic in the new forum if we were to create it.

While having a broader 'Transportation' forum is better than just a 'Flights' forum, will the creation of the forum split the transportation questions (which are usually destination-specific) away from the regional forums? Will members be confused as to where to post their questions? Should they post question about European budget airlines in the Europe forum, or the Transportation forum?

flyingbob, I think for a start, the good tips that you have can be put down in the Travel Guide. We have a article in there, and you can always expand from there as you see fit. Then it can be linked back to here in the forums, either as a reference link, or even a sticky thread. I think the idea of creating a new flights or transportation forum can always be revisited when we have more of such threads in GT.

Thanks for your kind responses. I'll give it a go.

I don't think we quite have a consensus on this yet. I'm somewhat in favour of it, but the concerns the others have are fair (possible confusion about where to post, etc.. ). Adding some more information into the guide would certainly be handy though. And new articles could be created specifically about flying!

Incidentally, if your travel agency has a website, you can actually get a decent link back for writing in the guide (see ) . Still have to write in a non-biased way obviously, but the link itself is valuable.

Thanks again very much for that, but we won't advertise our website on Travellerspoint as there are a few of us working here all on the same 'Flyingbob' username and password. And although we all know the rules, if we get agency workers in that have ideas (we are always so up for new inspirations), then they might just post something spammy or not allowed, when we're out the office. We've had a chat about it though and will put forward as much input in a totally impartial and non advertising way, whenever we can.
Incidentally we have sent a few Pm's to Travellerspoint members and have saved them a packet, just by pointing them in the right direction.
