I have been travelling around china since the begining of February and am meting up with a friend in Hanoi on the 5th of April i want to get there a few days before as my visa is valid from the 1st for 30 days and i want to get my bearings so i dont waste time when my friend arrives.
I believe the bus would be best. There is a train to the border, and then another train into Hanoi, but it gets rather complicated that way. I haven't been on either, but there is plenty of info on the net - just search away.

Yes, from Nanning you can take direct train to Hanoi, and stop at Gia Lam Train station as far as I know
i took the bus then, so it must be the cheapest.
thanks everyone was really useful info even though i ended up going to loas! thanks again!!
From 1 January 2009, a new daily overnight train has linked Hanoi & Nanning. This is a standard-gauge Chinese sleeper train that runs all the way from Nanning to Hanoi. The timetable is as follows (but always double-check locally, reports suggest they've changed it yet again, and it now leaves Nanning at 18:45 and Hanoi at 22:40): (train number: T871/MR2 for route Naning-Hanoi; and train code MR2/T872 for route Hanoi-Naning
How to buy tickets: Tickets are sold in Nanning at the station reservations office counter 16 and at Hanoi Main Station counter 10. Tickets are also sold in Hanoi by Vietnam Hanoi Railways Tourist Company (152 Le Duan Street, Hanoi). In Hanoi, you'll need to show your passport and Chinese visa when buying tickets.
Nanning-Hanoi by daytime bus: If the train is full or you prefer daytime travel, there are several daily buses between Nanning & Hanoi, using modern coaches. Buses reportedly leave Nanning bus station at 08:30. 09:00 & 09:30, journey time 7-8 hours. The scenery is reported as well worth the trip!
