me and my friend sarah are travelling through south america and are currently in ecuador. sarah has just had her bag stolen with both her visa card in and that is the card we have been using this whole trip as we have encountered troubles with maestro. was wondering if anyone knew whether maestro is accepted in peru, argentina, bolivia, uraguy and brazil??

I went travelling using my Maestro card and a Mastercard credit card as backup last summer (English summer). Maestro worked in all of the countries I visited: Brasil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Bolivia and Colombia.
I had a few minor problems. The bank stopped my card twice "because someone has been using my card all over South America" despite numerous warnings, but that's another story. Also, I had some problems with ATM machines in Buenos Aires being a bit temperamental with my Maestro card. However I was told at the hostel this may be down to ATM machines running out of cash. I also used my card in Mendoza successfully. I just had to use the "Link" ATM's.
I'm not sure about Uruguay, so I can't help you there, sorry.
