just wondering which peoples preference is to getting RTW tickets or just paying as you go..? I know that RTW tickets are usually cheaper but i was wondering if they could limit stay in some places and give you less opinions to be open to new travelling plans along the way....?
I think it's down to personal preference and what you actually want from travelling. I'm going travelling in May, but I have a fixed 3 month time frame as I'm going to uni in September, so I've booked a RTW flight as it's cheaper and I don't require the flexibility.
If I were going for a longer (or unspecified) amount of time, I'd consider just booking flights as I go. That way you can play it by ear; if you really like somewhere (or, like your mate, get a job) you can stay for as long as you like before moving on.
My ticket (London to NY, LA to Tahiti, Tahiti to Auck, C'Church to Bris, Cairns to HK (via Auck), HK to London) cost me just over £1,500. I looked them all up online and buying them individually would've cost £4,000.
I'm definitely in the pay as you go fan group. Not only do you have incredible flexibility, but with all the discount airlines around these days you can often hop between places for $30 or less. Certainly within regions like SE Asia or Europe it makes little sense to be on a RTW ticket anymore. But if you are going into places like Africa, hopping around South America or spending a lot of time in the former Soviet republics it might make sense to be on a RTW ticket.
RTW's are slowly becoming a thing of the past, all thanks to budget airlines. It does pay to spend time looking at different routes on comparison sites - and directly with airlines, checking out a combination of fares, then looking at the cost of the same route bought on a RTW ticket.
There are winners and losers, but the winners are fast becoming the PAYG fares.

I'm off travelling in September and have booked my flight to Singapore and am just gonna leave it there I think and book as I go for more freedom.
After looking on air asia's website you can get flights so cheap within Asia and also flying over to Oz so think that'll be the way to go for me! Hoping I can get some last minuite deals at the time!
