Im looking to leave australia and head to Beijing where I will make my way through China and then to Vietnam, Cambodia Laos and India before going to New Zealand for a year, In all im giving myself 5 months to do the journey from September to February.
Air China has some deals where return flights are around AUD$1000. You can get one way flights on Qantas for around $800 i think.
Catching buses is the cheapest option of travelling. Can also be the most uncomforatble and also difficult in terms of getting tickets, particulalrly if you dont speak the language. Dragon Bus China runs "hop-on, hop-off" trips in China and a new company - "Stray Asia" is starting the same in Laos and Cambodia from about July onwards, so check them out. These would be the cheapest options for you to have the trips somewhat organised for you and you can travel with others doing the same thing.
Must do's in China - Beijing, Shanghai, Xian. If you like the beach and beer - Qingdao. Huangshan for mountain scenery. Guilin/Yangshuo for natural cliffs, Hangzhou for the lake, Nanjing for history, Shaolin for the Monks.
Try Air Asia to Kuala Lumpur then a connecting flight to Tianjin, this is only 30 minutes away from Beijing by high speed train. In China the train system is very good, we tried to avoid using buses in China and only took trains and one internal flight. Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam are really easy to travel around. Laos has a minibus system where you will be able to share with other travellers, Cambodia has big buses which are easy to travel on and Vietnam has the famous open bus network, which connects all the main places...very, very cheap travel!
I would say though that 5 months to do China, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and India isn't very long, we have spent more than a month on several different occasions in each of these countries. I think you will probably have to miss something off, the most logical choice being India.

Best and cheapest option, by far.

Damn, I just bought my round ticket for 1157 AUD.... and I could have spend a weekend at KL too....
Well, I'm going to Shanghai, but I suppose this calls for more digging at the ticket prices next time.
Hiya, I picked up flights from Australia to Guilin (via KL) return for AUD$250 with AirAsia in August...
