Insurance, blah ;)

Hello- I've done some searching on this and I don't seem to be able to find this exact topic- I'm planning a trip to Europe (from the US) for a bit and I do plan to get Travel Insurance. The one I'm looking at includes Trip Cancellation, Coverage to Lost, Stolen or Damaged Baggage along with medical expenses. Now, in getting this, is to unnecessary to get the insurance from the airline while booking the flight? It seems as though it'd be a bit repetitive. But, I've never gone overseas before and I'm hoping someone with some experience in this area could help me.

Yes. It is unnecessary. As a rule, the last thing you want to do is buy insurance directly from the airline. There are much cheaper options available that will probably be more reliable if something were to happen.

That said, be sure you know the ins and outs of the insurance you will purchase. Call and ask specific questions if the fine print is complicated. Not all insurance is created equal, and you want to make sure you're prepared just in case (though more often than not, you will never need it.)

Enjoy your first trip overseas! I'm excited for you!
