Hi! Two friends and I are travelling across East Coast America and into Canada- from New York to Toronto. We have a rough plan to travel from NYC- Cape Cod area-Boston-Montreal- Toronto, but where wondering where to visit from NYC to Boston?!We want to visit some of the beaches but there are so many and don't know which are best and which have cheap places to stay-hostels and maybe campsites. We also are planning on travelling on train/bus in this area and then from Boston start using our greyhound bus passes. Any recommendations of beaches/places to stay please?! Thank you!
The only two beach places are either (1) Rocky Neck State Park in East Lyme, Connecticut--or else (2) out on the Cape Cod Seashore in Massachusetts. You can't actually camp at the Cape Cod Seashore, but you can nearby.

P.S. There has been significant damage from recent stormes at Cape Cod, so I'd camp in Connecticut if I were you.

Or tour the excellent submarine museum with the First US nuclear Sub the USS Nautilus in Groton Connecticut.
A few ideas for Montreal,Main night spots would include Crescent st. and St Denis st.and during daytime hours "the underground city"

I realize Maine is north of Boston, but is the real gem in New England for several reasons. For one, it's not as crowded, it's more natural and beautiful than Conn, and the seafood can't be beat (think Maine Lobster and Clam Bakes).
Other places worth considering are Mystic Seaport (a living history museum) in Mystic, Connecticut and/or the Mystic Aquarium which is a really nice one. There is also Yale University (and the Peabody Museum), in New Haven, CT, the capitol district in Hartford, the New Bedford Whaling Museum in Sharon, Mass is an amazing maritime museum- and is actually a combination of two different museums.
For lighthouses and a cool (and mostly deserted beach) head to Watch Hill Rhode Island and take a look at the lighthouse and go to East Beach.
Block Island is pretty cool too, but it's hardly easy or cheap.

Newport RI might be a nice stop. Providence is along the way to Boston.
Cape Cod is a side trip you can take.
Hotels on the outskirts of Boston will be cheaper than in the city if you want to save money. Boston has a pretty good subway system. Parking in the city stinks. Some hotels in the suburbs have rail service to Boston. Park at your hotel and take the train in. (MBTA)
