Generally, most visitor visas are granted only for 90 days or less.

The presumption in the law is that every visitor visa applicant is an intending immigrant. Therefore, applicants for visitor visas must overcome this presumption by demonstrating that:

Evidence of funds to cover expenses in the United States;
Evidence of compelling social and economic ties abroad; and
That they have a residence outside the U.S. as well as other binding ties that will insure their return abroad at the end of the visit.
As you may or may not realize, the issue of illegal immigration is a big deal in the US right now--with there even being political candidates arguing over what should be done--and with a recent law passed in Arizona being a big issue of debate between different political groups.
For this reason, if you plan to apply for a visitor visa, be sure you have very good documentation to show that your intent is only to stay for the one-year period--and then return home.
Oh, and purchasing a car as a foreigner is no problem.

I was thinking of that - but the cost to rent a car for 12 months is excessive. Also they charge extra to return to a different depo! I imagine you cant get much further apart than NY to Fairbanks!
I couldnt see joe public wanting to lend anyone a car for that length of time - so purchasing is the only option. But have heard that insurance will be around £3500 for the year! Could this be accurate?

We would have our tickets for the return flight, and jobs / family to return to...
In the UK immegration is a massive problem too. It seems that if i flew in on a 90day visa and just ignored it I would be 'fine' but actually doing it the right way will be long, difficult and fruitless!
Well, actually--ignoring the law is the quickest way to make sure you can never return.
If that's okay with you, fine--but I suggest you consider a different option--like seeing if you can get a multiple entry visa that requires that you leave the country every 90 days--then going to Canada or Mexico on that schedule--which would probably work if you plan to visit Alaska, the continental US and Canada.
