pay as you go SIM for my phone?

Help please! I’m off my round the world travels on the 19th june and first stop is South America where I will be for 2.5 months. I currently have a Blackberry on a t-mobile contract (uk) which I’m going to pay off and cancel and leave the phone behind. If I take a tri-band phone with me will I be able to just get a pay as you go sim on arriving in brazil which I can use in south America? Any help appreciated as I’m really unsure what to do about phones! After south America I’m going to new Zealand then oz so was planning on getting pay as you go sims in those places also, will this be easy enough to do?

Hi where are you going in s.america? I am going with Intrepid for 3 months in July

1st call would be you'll have to get your phone unlocked (easy and cheap in the UK).
Brazil you can easily pick up PAYG sims (not sure on the data usage in areas outside Rio, but phone calls are grand).
Aus and NZ no probs, using your blackberry.

I have a basic quadband phone that i take when traveling, the battery lasts 4 to 6 weeks and charges on a USB cable.

I thought mine was good at three weeks. Is 4 to 6 normal now?

I'm not up on the latest technology of anything really.
