best place for a backpacker to live in melbourne

I'm not sure how easy it is to find accomodation in Melbourne nowadays, but there's a few options where you could look for somewhere to live.
Either check out the ads in the window of Reading's bookstore on Lygon Street (ads change weekly every friday) or the notice boards at Melbourne Uni or the cafés and restaurants on Smith Street.
Alternatively you can check online on Melbourne gumtree, often students sublet their rooms during the semester break. This could be a nice possibility to live with locals instead of living with other foreigners at a hostel.
As for the areas in Melbourne where to live, I can only tell you about my personal preferences. I'm a big fan of Fitzroy, Collingwood, Richmond and Brunswick. They are all lively neighbourhoods not too far from the city center, with many students living there and affordable rent.
Hope this helps and good luck getting started in Melbourne.

When I lived in Melbourne for a few months I shared a place in the Kensington/Newmarket area. It was a nice area, easily accessed by tram or train from the CBD. I can also recommend the Greenhouse Backpackers for the beginning of your stay

I can't see past St kilda as THE place to be in Melbourne. Its jammed full of bars, cafes, backpackers, is close to the city and has a beach. Ave lived there many times and loved it every time. Certainly worth checking out as least mate.

If ure looking accomodation, I'd recommend Habitat HQ on St Kilda Rd. Its a great hostel.

Good luck

Lee
