Aloha!
As the saying goes, 'a week is a long time in politics' and September is a million miles away.
I wouldn't stress. I was there when it all started and if it had not been for all the carry on in the media I would not have known it was going on. I had the best time, Greece is one of my favourite places so far.
Hope you are able to get to the Greek islands. (If it helps, I am travelling alone and I am still alive....)
It would be a shame to avoid Syntagma Square because that's basically the hub where all the fun is. When you get to your hotel/hostel ask the front desk person what's going on. I was in Greece for a week a couple of years ago and it was a little bit of a culture shock seeing so many random men being rather "hot tempered" compared to the midwestern American men I'm used to. For example. the pilot on my trip back from Athens suddenly got mad and went on strike for an hour so we were delayed taking off. Not saying that to scare you, you'll be just fine and I met a ton more perfectly nice people. Just don't be shocked if you hear guys screaming and yelling for no apparent reason, lol. It's everyday life drama, not a riot starting. Sorry if this offends any Greek people here, just relaying my brief experience in Greece.
