The best place to go between Milan & Rome

Try Bologna. Not as overrun with tourists as Venice or Florence and a pretty and vibrant university city.

I recommend going to Bologna and then taking a train east or west from there to the wonderful small cities in Bologna's province, Emilia Romagna.

If you take the train east from Bologna, stop in Imola, Faenza, Cesena, Forli, and end up in Rimini. If you go west you can visit Modena, Reggio Emilia, and Parma........then go down to lovely Lucca. All wonderful and not mobbed with tourists.

Thanks so much for your replies guys! I'm looking it up now, seems beautiful. I will definitely look into it more

I've never used a car in Italy. There are many places you can get directly to by train or bus. Personally, I didn't care for Bologna and I suggest a smaller city such as Siena.
