hi im Liam im 23 and going travelling by myself in september , starting in goa overland mumbai-bangkok travelling overland laos,vietnam etc down to singapore then over to australia(not booked yet) if you have any advice on routes, do's and don'ts,recommendations i would be most grateful, this is quite a big deal for me im nervous but excited if u know what i mean so im just trying to get as much knowledge about it as i can before i go, thanks!

Got your passport? How long will you be on this trip? Check the visa requirements for each country. Now is the time to figure out how to handle your money. Do you really want to be running around some of these places with a bag full of cash? Some of these places you can use debit cards in but you have to notify your bank or credit union that you will be overseas and where at. If you don't tell your bank where you are going your ATM withdrawal maybe suspected of being fraudulent and your withdrawal may be denied.
Very ambitious itinerary for your holiday, do you have enough time? Would your trip be better with fewer countries on your list and just stay longer to actually see and experience the countries you visit? Pick up a Lonely Planet Travel Guide for some additional help.

My best pieces of advice are don't rush things, and try not to overly plan your whole trip out. It's easy to want to see everything, but I think you will enjoy things much more if you take things a bit slowly. Having time for a few days relaxing in one place here and there are great. And also being able to follow fellow travellers advice, a small town off the beaten track for example. The best bits of a trip are often the unplanned ones.
Obviously visas and flights need some planning, but its nice to only plan a few days in advance and go with the flow.
Sounds like a great trip. I did a similar one the other way round though.
Nothing will prepare you for India so it will be a shock! The rest of your trip will be a doddle afterwards though. I loved India but it just took me a week of hating first to see how amazing this country really is.
Eating food on the trains and from the street is fine but try and choose places that are generally busy. The locals know where the best food is and if its busy then the food wont of been sitting around for too long.
If anyone asks you how long you have been in the country tell then at least a month and they are less likely to overcharge you. And remember not everyone is trying to rip you off, some people really are exceptionally generous even when they have nothing, but keep you wits about you.
Also when haggling don't get too sucked in and remember how much money you are really haggling over!
A selection of funds, i.e. cash, traveller cheques, credit card is always good to have in different parts of your bag in case one goes missing.
But most of all take it all in as it will be over before you know it!

the plan is india for 4 weeks then thailand,laos,malaysia for about 10 weeks and id like to work in australia for approximately a yr,obviously i can not plan it all out because you just go with the flow with travelling and i can have date changes with the travel agents but thanks for the advice about handling money il let the banks know and i might end up doing as u say spending more time in fewer countries

yeh im in no rush whatsoever which is good and i get 1 free date change with my ticket and £35 after that which isnt too bad and im totally with you on the best things happen unplanned cheers
I will agree with Rambler1. India will be a shock to the system. I am also currently doing a similar trip. I started in Nepal and am now in India, before heading across to SE Asia. Nothing is quite like an Indian city. Such an assault on the senses. An amazing place. I'm sure you will get quite a bit of culture shock starting there, but give it a chance and it's a spectacular experience.

Yeah its true, you will find a country India a totally different. You will be thrilled with the cultural festival here in India, throughout year.
