world's most diffcult country borders to cross overland

What are in your experience and opinion, the world most difficult country borders to cross overland?

The most difficult border must be between North and South Korea, especially when you are a North Korean trying to get south.

The old Iron Curtain wasn't a picknick either. You have no freaking clue how glad I am it's gone.

Yes, North Korea is possibly the worst. Then Myanmar, Iran and Iraq. A friend of mine (a New Zealander) had to wait a month, in Pakistan, to get the visa to enter Iran.

I hear the route from Panama to Colombia (known as the 'Darien Gap') is difficult for other reasons: it's an intermittent trail through thick jungle in an area controlled by cocaine smugglers. Not a good place for a family vacation... Most people choose to fly from Panama to Colombia, to avoid it.

Then there's the Karakorum Highway, from China to Pakistan (a route I want to travel someday). On the Chinese side, travellers have to travel in caravan, especially at night, as the locals have a 2,000 year old tradition of banditry. People still disappear on that road, every year. On the Pakistan side, the road is supposedly safer.

...some of the more difficult crossings must be in Africa, much baksheesh must pass hands in some places...and not just at the borders...

...on a lighter note: anyone ever encountered a 'jobsworth' at one of the channel ports on a Sunday morning?...no fun, I can tell you.....!

Personally, the hardest border I've had to cross was... Canada to the US. I was held there forever, questioned, my bags thoroughly searched whilst they took down the phone numbers of my friends (who I was visiting) and called them... I was sitting at the border for ages, and I'm really not looking forward to crossing the US border again!

Sorry, not quite as exciting as north/south Korea!
