I'm going to be heading out to India,Thailand,Vietnam and Laos backpacking solo for the first time in a few months. I want to know if it's hard for a decent looking/young guy to meet female backpackers and have the occasional fling. Does this happen alot? I read how alot of women are on the defense (which is understandable) while traveling because of sexual harasment issues. I'm not looking nececarily for sex or anything...just some fun with a girl who's culture is different.
Never ever call it a "fling" unless you're over 70.
Seriously, it's best not to plan this stuff - it'll show.

I'm sure it happens quite a lot, but like fabyomama says, it's not really the kind of thing you can plan. Getting together with someone won't be at the forefront of most female travellers' minds, and like you say, a female travelling alone is going to be a little more cautious than they probably would be back home.
You will instantly have something in common with other backpackers (travel) and as such you will probably meet plenty of like- minded young people, so I suppose you could say it's a situation conjusive to having relations with the opposite sex.

Say whaaaaat?? Not all backpacker chicks have bad hygiene! I'm certainly familiar with the Thai idea of the "birdshit falang" but still... ouch!
And to Bobby- flings do happen, but not as much as you'd think. Flirting is somehow so commonplace that it doesn't really mean anything at all, and doesn't often lead to something. Still, you're definitely around a lot of cool like-minded people... just don't spend too much time "on the pull" because we see right through that It's also tough because girls tend to stay in packs so it might be harder to get one alone long enough to make a connection! Just put good, harmless vibes out there and the opportunity will present itself.

Thanks for the insight. I'm not really planning or counting on it happening. I was just curious as to how often it happens. I'm probably going to be away for a few months so I figured It would be nice to have a more intimate connection with a female traveler on occasion. I'll just see how things go.

You're going to have a fantastic time if you dont go out with expectations.
I'm an average looking guy and have had only a couple of opportunities with travelers, which i havent pursued for different reasons over the 7 months in SE Asia ive been traveling. I havent been looking but I think you will have a better experience if you dont look.
Wouldnt you rather have flings with the local girls?
When I say that, I dont mean prostitutes, occasionally you will meet a nice local girl to show you around their city or town if you are friendly and respect their culture.
