Im tired of spending xmas in the Uk and me and my friends want to do something a bit different. We where thinking Hawaii but now our focus is on Costa Rica. Just wondering if anyones been (especaily over this period) to give me a heads up on pros and cons.
Hi.
I can give you a few pointers about Costa Rica, I went for three weeks between jan and feb this year, it is an amazing place, I can not exaggerate how brilliant this country is, you have to go there!
I would advise going to the south, to Corcovada National Park. We had our first 3 days there, and met some really cool people, most of which were conservationaists, authors and retired univeristy professors, as well as their really cool network of highly experienced and knowledgeable guides that they work with.
If you want to see some wildlife, this is the place to go. Everybody we met told us 'well, you've come to the best place first'. We were like 'well they're gonna say that, they live here'. But it really was the best place of the whole trip for us. You can fly here in 40 mins for San Jose domestic airport, to Puerto Jiminez. I have the email address of some really good guys who can arrange anything for you down there.
Corcovada National Park is just... well I could go on about it all day, it's insane! The wildlife there is as diverse as it comes, according to National Geographic it is 'biologically the most intense place on Earth'. In just 3 days we saw crocs, humpbacks, green turtles, dolphins, jungle Puma, scarlett makaws, all sorts of monkeys, snakes, not to mention the plants and insects. And the breathtaking views. We saw the puma with it's cub and the croc literally catching and eating a bird, we were very lucky there just as we passed a river mouth, which we had waded through the day before and were to wade through the day after. Also, we saw baby green turtles make it to the water for the first time!
If its not just trekking and wildlife you're after. Up North, Monteverde seemed like a good place for the adventure sports, they had everything from quadding, white water rafting to ziplining up there. It's very touristy but with that comes ease of arranging your activities, and many places to go out and have a good night. I'd recommend doing the things unique to CR though, like the jungle treks, although CR is said to have some of the best white water rafting in the world so you should try that, it's agood laugh.
Jaco beach is the party place, about an hour from San Jose by car. I think there are other places for that too where we didn't end up going, a little reseach will tell you the party places tho. Places stay open late and the women are absolutely beautiful, even randomers in the street in San Jose or the ones in remote rural villages, they are just naturals.
The Caribbean coast is mental too! Heavy influence of jamaican culture, lots of reggae and weed, this is literally what fills your senses where ever you go, even in the bars around the corner from the police station. All places are worth seeing in Costa Rica, you will find something you like I guarantee it.
With the country being so small and diverse you'll be able to see so many different things. The Volcanoes are worth seeing (erupting with lava flows if you are lucky and there is no cloud, like there was for us, search Arenal or Poas valcano).
Any other questions please don't hesitate to ask, I can go on about it all day lol, you have made the right decision in Costa Rica!!
These guys have a lot of useful info on their youtube channel. They have a lot about the gay scene over there which may not be your cup of tea but alot of the info on the other videos came in very hand for us.
