I am studying abroad in China next year and wanted to create an online journal where I can post pictures and updates for my friends back home to view. I know that China practices internet censorship (along with other types of censorship) and I was wondering if anyone who had been to China in the past 2-4 years had experience any problems logging into their Travellerspoint account. Of course this question goes out to all of travellers whom have gone to areas where the internet is heavily watched.
I was in China in 2007, visiting Shanghai, Guilin, Yangshuo and surroundings. Never had a problem.
Just the other day I saw a blog being started by someone already in China for the specific purpose that it wasn't blocked, whereas their other one was. So I'd say it works as of today.
Hi there -
It might have been me... I live in China, and on our home internet we can access Travellerspoint without using a VPN, whereas we can't access Blogspot, Facebook, etc.
The Great Firewall of China administrators change what you can access all the time, for example massive crackdown on web access around time of 10yr anniversary of Tian'anmen Square, recent Google issues, etc. I just hope they don't work out how to block access to VPNs!!
If you are travelling with a laptop perhaps you can investigate downloading a VPN before you come, and then you won't (shouldn't) have any issues accessing anything, as you can log into the VPN as required. We use a VPN through the UK.
Hope that helps.
Cheers,
Abby
