I didn't so the Funky Chicken pass, but I travelled round NZ with the Kiwi Bus and I've got to say I had a great time, and met loads of people.
sounds like a good deal but there are loads of similar packages being launched at the moment by all the backpacker bus options - you probably dont need to rush into one (particularly if dates etc may change)
my advice would be to choose which style of trip you like best from the main companies and then try and get a good deal with them. the main operators are:
