I would say it depends where you are going...U probably need a good few months to sort out injections visas stuff you need save cash? but everyones trip is different...also try and get a ticket with free date changes as you almost certainly will want to change dates...I leave in september and know at least two of the dates I have selected will have to change. The more flexibility you give yourself the better.
When buying round the world tickets always, always check out how much it will cost to change dates, believe me the chances of you doing a 12 month trip without wanting to change a date is unlikely, also the cost for changing the route which we did.
I read about one guy who hadn't considered this and it cost him $1000 to change the route ouch!!
