We are a group of 4 people, travling to USA for our 3 th time, this time the trip is going to start in Minneapolis, up to Fargo, North Dakota, then down tow South Dakota, then trough Wyoming, Montana, Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona(Grand Canyon), and then to our final destination, Nevada(Las Vegas).
I guess if you are starting from Minneapolis, Mall of America would be a good starting point.
i ll put it on the list, thnxmy girlfriend will be happy about that one, hehe.
just to fill something in about us, the group ages is from 21- 25 years old, from Norway.
our goal for the trip is to have fun and get great memories, we have traveld the route 66 and been to Florida and Key West;
in the years to come we hope to have seen all the states in the USA.

You may also want to include Glacier National Park once you get to the mountains..
There is a large Norwegian-American community in Minneapolis area, you'll feel right at home.
On your way, do visit the Black Hills of South Dakota (Rapid City area) and see the Mount Rushmore memorial. It is iconic, and recommend you see it mid-morning when the sunlight lights up the monument granite faces.
In Wyoming, Yelowstone National Park and Grand Teton park will show you amazing geographic diversity and wildlife.

I'll second Yellowstone and Grand Teton NP, worth around 3-5 days depending on what you like.
If going south from Oregon, maybe visit Redwood NP along the coast. Further down, San Francisco is a great city. From there head east to Yosemite NP and the Sequoia forests along the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Head east from there to Death Valley. From Death Valley go southeast towards Route 66 and the Grand Canyon. And back north again to Las Vegas.
I suggest the Snake River & (where Idaho meets Oregon & Washington) for sheer beauty in the Pacific Northwest. Closer to Portland, the Columbia River Gorge is chock full of - if you don't mind a trek or two.
Oregon and Washington State are also heavy with Norwegian/Americans - I believe most are transplants from the Midwest.
We're loaded with volcanoes in this part of the world (Pacific Rim) and most are in the western parts of these states. (Mt. Rainier, Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Adams)

like one we found right before The jessie james cavers along route 66, it was a local reptile ranch, where we met the owners of it and sat down with them and drank beer, after a good tour with, snakes,sea turtels,alligators, a lion, 2 tigers, silver foxes and many more,good memory about that place. just an exampel of what i am also looking forit was just a awsome place and a good example of the good american hospitalaty

I am really looking forward to get back to the states. i am happy that i have a little time to plan the trip, to get the most out of the trip, and we the help from all of you our trip is gonna be awsome. the plane tickets is soon orderd, and so are the car. we will leave Norway the 25 of May 2011. so we have a good time planing this trip.

In South Dakota, you should stop and see the Badlands National Park, Mount Rushmore, possibly Wind Cave National Park, and the western town of Deadwood.

Visit the Seattle Space Needle, and the Experience Music Project (right at the base of the Space Needle). There is also an alien (like space aliens) museum here.

In Oregon, its all about nature--but I like Crater Lake and the Shakespeare festival in Ashland the best.

luckely i have seen some of the places in california before like Death Valley, San Diego's Mission Bay, Lake Tahoe ,San Francisco, Santa Barbara, Carmel, coast route, Hearst Castle. have also seen lake powell, las vegas,and grand canyon before, but these places are definetly worth as secound time.
