Where to start?!

Hi Steph,

My GF and I arrived in Sydney 3 weeks ago and we are loving Sydney. Our first impressions were not good as STA booked us into a really dodgy hostel, it was filthy and had bed bugs. We booked an arrivals package through STA and it was pretty poor to be honest. We ended up doing everything our self through Travelers Contact Point in Sydney.
I would recommend arriving in Sydney, book into Base or Wake UP or there is a new YHA Hostel near the harbour that looks really nice. I wouldn't worry about traveling by yourself, there are so many people doing the same, everyone just mixes together and makes friends.

Good Luck

Hi Steph,
I went to Aus last October for 5 weeks on my own, then on to NZ for 4 weeks and absolutely loved it. I started in Cairns and travelled down to Sydney on the greyhound. Met loads of people and was never on my own unless I wanted to be.....it was the most amazing experience being able to do whatever you want to do - my only regret was not staying longer - I only had a couple of months off work so had to come back. I am now planning to go back this October on a working holiday visa and quitting my job etc!
If you want any advice or anything then just personal message me - I found this site so helpful before I went and it gave me confidence to know that other people have done exactly the same as me. I met loads of girls travelling on their own (way more than lone boys)....
Good luck with the planning!

Start in Sydney would be my recommendation. It is a wonderful city and will help you to accumulate to the culture quickly and you'll get to experience one of the most vibrant and wonderful cities on Earth. After that I'd start working your way down the coast and check out all the wonderful sites near the ocean.

Thanks everyone, Thats a huge help. I wasn't sure whether to start in sidney or melbourne! But judging by what everyone is saying Sidney is the place to start! Just wondered if anyone would advise renting a car or just using public transport the majority of the time?
Many Thanks
Steph

Hi Steph, I went to Australia over 07/08 and it was great. I went on my own, didn't book anything until I landed. As for transport, Sydney's underground/subway is very good. They have double decker trains, and you even get phone reception under ground. No need to rent a car in Sydney.

Now I'm off to New Zealand in December hopefully for a year or 2.

Thanks. I have been umming and arring about whether to rent a car or not!
Didnt really want the hassel of it, but just wasnt sure. Im hoping to spend
longer in new zealand than I first planned! Not quite as long as you but a
few months! I cant wait!!

HEYYYY GUYSSS :D

Not been on here for a wile lovely to see a few people going around the same time as me i fly out October 5th and realy cant wait ive booked everything apart from my hostel for the 1st week thinking of YHA or one near kings cross i forget the name. im going it alone kind of a confidence booster for me i need better people skills i tend to go quiet around other people. cant wait for BBQs and beers on the beech. seems like loads and loads are going it alone im heading upto brisbane after my 1st month to play abit of rugby league so that should be alot of fun and if i dont like it i can just take off and find another club ha im on a 12 month whv so i might do the whole seasonal work and get another visa if i like it and if i can find a decent job etc.... would love to hear more for you lot before we all take off not long at all now ahhhhhhhhh maybe a big meetup is in order???

Garry x
