Road Trip of Europe

Hi, me and a few mates are looking into a road trip at the end of the summer as an alternative to the usual lads booze up holidays we are used to. We have cheap access to a campervan so are planning on using the tunnel to get to mainland and camp as we go, maybe booking a few hostels for a bit of comfort every now and again.

A camper van from Amsterdam to Ibiza wont be much use, unless you're intending to take it on the '2nd mortgage' ferry.
I would suggest, get yourself from Amsterdam across to Brussels and then hop on board a Ryanair flight to Ibiza.

Mid-September onwards will be a lot cheaper than even a week or two earlier. You can drop into internet cafes and book your hostals (some hostals may be able to book onward accommodation). Hostelworld is not always that cheap and often lousy accommodation so shop around.

You can drive down through France to Spain (a good map / atlas would help. Remainder book shops have them cheap). Avoid the toll roads in France (and Spain) as they can work out expensive over such distances. If you drive down to Valencia and park away from the city centre where you will not be towed (they take illegal parking seriously), you can go foot passenger on the ferry to Ibiza and stay there for a few days, then foot passenger back. They may have a cheap deal for your van on the ferry but unlikely.

European breakdown insurance is good. Do Tesco still do it? If you breakdown even in town, a tow can cost more than the insurance would, and if necessary, they will tow you home. I know a lot of Brits chance it but if driving in Spain you should have a bail bond. An insurance company can arrange it.

As flyingbob said though, it may be better to pick up some cheap flights. London to Amsterdam to Ibiza (and maybe another destination), with hostal accommodation at those places since you are talking a fortune in fuel (campervans do tend to drink fuel) and other expenses, like Eurotunnel.
