For approximately SGD (Singapore) 1000 dollars , excluding air fare for about 25 days..lone female traveller, which country is better? Vietnam or Myanmar?
I think you should choose VN for your first solo adventure. VN is a safe country for a solo female visitor to visit. It has plenty to see/do: great beaches, swimming/diving options, overnight cruises on HaLong Bay, ancient ruins, trekking, great shopping, etc. All at affordable prices. You will be able to find accommodation in most cites at $10/night, less in some cities. I stayed under $5/day for meals almost everyday. ' to really save on daily expenses. Your transport costs can be kept quite low by using the bus system between HCMC & HAN. Cheaper and more convenient than the train system, not as safe however. Many more bus accidents than train accidents every year. If you choose the train system, here is a helpful .
I have not been to Myanmar so I will let others give their pitch for that country.

alot of people also think Vietnam is safest country in Indochina. You should visit.

I loved Vietnam although I did get pick pocketed in HCMC. It was my own fault tho, you just have to be careful like you would be in any big city. I havent been to Myanmar but thinking about it for the end of this year

VN certainly has thieves taking advantage of the unwary and trusting. As most countries do. Las Vegas has pickpockets at the 'Sirens of the T.I.' show. Makes the papers when they break up a pickpocket ring. I have been to VN 5 times and never had anything stolen. I use an for valuables. Keep your passport, bank cards, money, etc. out of sight. Have your daily money in a pocket closed with velcro. I suggest you buy a to secure your belongings when it is out of your sight. Make it difficult for thieves to ruin your holiday. Most countries have serious, confrontational crime: armed robbery, rape, kidnapping, murder. VN has very little of such crime. I would not dismiss VN because of pickpockets & thieves.
Mynamar is a police state. I seriously doubt you would ever hear of any crime committed there. When you control the media, no bad news makes it into print.
I really think any solo traveler in Myanmar would feel strange. In Vietnam, English is widely understood, and very easy to travel. I think the crime thing is much overblown - I've been there 3 times and never been robbed. On the contrary, the Vietnamese people are the reason I go there - some of the most generous I've ever come across. Many tourists just don't use their common sense when in a foreign country. Any poor country will have it's share of petty crime, and I don't think Vietnam is especially bad.
You will feel especially welcome if you use the student guide services - they're free and wonderful - the bonus is that you've made an instant new friend (Hanoikids, Saigonhotpot and Danangkids).
I loved Vietnam but loved Myanmar more! The people are amazing and it's much more unspoilt than Vietnam as there are far fewer tourists. It's also very safe for tourists and you would be perfectly fine as a lone female traveller. I didn't have any problems with theft or pickpockets etc in Vietnam either but I definitely felt I had to me on my guard more than in other SE Asian countries. Both countries are beautiful in parts. The food in Vietnam is the best I experienced in SE Asia. It's outstanding!
There are plenty of solo travellers in both countries and you should be able to hook up with others to travel on with if you wanted.
I'm sure you have read up on Myanmar but obviously it's important to try and ensure, where possible, that as little of your money goes to the terrible regime as possible. Your visa fee will go to the government which is unavoidable, but apart from that you should be able to stay in/eat at privately-run guesthouses and restaurants and avoid government-run tours and transport. Some people (including Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the opposition) think that tourists should boycott Myanmar but after visiting the country I feel very strongly that tourism is a good thing for the people of Myanmar.
Hiyas, I will echo Bex76 comments, the vibe in Myanmar is quite laid back & in comparison Vietnam is on steroids. Travel in Vietnam will be easier & more comfortable. Both are brilliant places to travel to, neither should disappoint...
Once again, THANKS for the advices. But I believe I should apologize here as I realise I failed to mention that I do speak Myanmar language fluently. I was born and grew up in Singapore but holding a Myanmar passport because of parents' citizenship, which I have yet to convert & can only do so when I'm older.
Reason why I am asking between this two country is that, firstly, I'm quite afraid of the political and military situation in Myanmar. Especially as a citizen of that country, I have this silly notion that I would not be able to come out again. Even though many citizens of that country have told me that it is ridiculous. Especially more so that I'm a Singapore Permanent resident, all the more reason they will allow me to leave their country. Friends of mine who are citizens of that country have been able to go and leave freely. But STILL..I tend to get a bit paranoid regarding this.
Vietnam is because of the language barrier, crime rates, cheating-tourist-case..so I was wondering as I must admit for travelling alone the first time. I am quite nervous.
Those who have been to this two country, is SGD1000 enough for about 1 month trip? Excluding airfare.
