Visa

Right im gonna fly in to bangkok in Oct and make my way round to vietnam through cambodia, up through vietnam across through Laos, back in to Thailand. Whats the score with Visa's, do i need to get them before I go, or as I enter in to each country? As im gonna be moving about quite a lot and dont know how long im going to be staying in one place, not sure how ill organise my visa's for travel. Any help?

Danny,
Thailand will give you a free 30 day visa waiver on arrival at Suvarnabhumi. Both Cambodia & Laos will sell you a visa when you arrive at their border.

VN is the exception. covers visa on arrival if you fly into VN. If you cross into VN via land, you will need to arrange your VN visa beforehand. Phnom Penh is probably the fastest & cheapest place to buy your VN visa in SEA. Sihanoukville has a VN Consulate and will sell you a visa while you stand there and chat with the guy.

Once you cross overland back into Tland, you will get a free 15 day visa waiver. If you need more than 15 days in Tland before flying home, you can get a 60 day tourist visa in either PP or Vientiane. Good luck with your planning.

Hi Vegasmike,

Thanks very much for the info, planning on getting to bangkok then heading through Laos into Vietnam. Where is the best place to cross from Laos into Nam? Is there a standard route and an advised place to head in? Can you get a tour through Laos to get into Nam? Im travelling on my own and ive heard Laos isn't as easy to navigat your way through as more tourist orientated Thailand for example.

Cheers for the help, will read your blog for advise to!

Dan

Dan,
I have never been to Laos, so I am no expert. This might help. Your choice of border crossing depends on where you are in Laos when you want to visit VN. You may have to backtrack if you want to visit HaNoi. Try to get a good map of Laos and plan out your route.

Be sure you purchase your VN visa while in Vientiane. You need to give them a date you will arrive in VN. The 30 day clock starts on that date, NOT when you enter VN. You cannot enter before that date. Takes some planning when you are crossing overland into VN.

Nice one mate

Looking at a map i think its probably easier to go through Cambodia to vietnam and head to Ho Minh city, then maybe head back through Laos into thailand at a later date. Im unsure wherther or not to go on a travel agent organised tour to help me get through cambodia/laos or whether im better off seeing how things plan out when im there. I pressume there will be people trying to sell me these tours when im out there.

Dan

Dan,
I think doing Cambodia first is a good idea. Be sure to read about the overland route . A long day, but many do it everyday. covers PP to HCMC, DaLat, over to Nha Trang in VN. I would do Cambodia on your own, VN is easy as well. Many TP members will help if you ask. I don't know what to say about Laos. Perhaps some Laos experts will help you with that part of your adventure.

Good luck with your planning.

I have a quick question....

I want to stay in Thailand for poss 2 months with the intention of finding work..... is the visa quite complex to get or pretty simple, i've looked and keep getting confused to which one i should get.... I'm thinking the non-immigrant b type.. or should i just get the tourist visa and if i find work then apply for the non-immigrant one?? Too many options!!

Sammy,
I would get the free 60 day tourist visa and take a look at work options once there. Stickman has been working in BKK for many years and knows the ins and outs of working/living in Thailand. I would read the many articles on his and then e-mail him if you have any questions. Good luck with your planning.

where are you now? or based? im english and just got a free multi entry visa for thailand. so both times i can enter the country either 60 or 90 days i forget which. they are handing them out free atm to get people to visit thailand (though im sure they are short of tourists
