Looking for a LIVELY Carribean resort near a cool town

I am looking for a fun place to go with a group of friends ages 17-18 and a few parents. We want a very lively resort with loud poolside music and people trying to get us involved in activites. We are young so we dont want a sleepy resort geared towards romance, and honey mooners or a child-oriented resorts with water slides. We dont want it too crazy like MTV Spring Break either. And we don't want to stay at an all-inclusive resort. Half the fun of going on a trip is looking around the local town and finding our own cool shopd, bars & resturants. So, we want a a really happening resort on the beach with a nice pool and lively staff trying to get a party going, within walking distnace of a carribean town with loads of shops and resturants. Im sure plenty of places like this I just dont know where. We could go pretty much ANYWHERE in the Carribean (Mexico, Aruba, Nassau, ect.) we just want to find out which ones have the coolest, town, hotels and not too-too touristy like Atlantis but still FUN and safe. And Jamaica and Domincan Republic sound sketchy if you leave the resort so maybe not there. We are still going with about 15-20 people so so if anyones herd about a group rate or a resort with villas on it that would be pretty cool too, but not neccesary.

Try out Puerto Viejo de Talamanca (Costa Rica)
If not of what you are looking for, switch to the Pacific coast and try Tamarindo (Costa Rica).

i agree with the above post. Puerto vieja is a really cool place. lots of places to eat and drink.

we didnt see any places that were massivaly busy but we went out of the main season..
