Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Belize, Costa Rica

Hi all, I’m leaving the US and relocating to Central or South America but know little about either. I have traveled enough to know not to put much faith in stereotypes.
I will be leaving from Oregon, driving through California, into Mexico, etc…
I’m sure Mexico and Central America are not as dangerous as we are led to believe but any advice on what are the safest routes/roads? I.E. less crime…I’m not going to get car-jacked for a 6-pack or my watch am I? Advice ranging from the crucial to the mundane would be appreciated. Practical things like, do I purchase my electrical adapters before or after I cross the border? Does it matter? Can I bring a few food items across the border or not? I like to travel with a bit of road trip food.
Also, any advice on where a disgruntled American looking to keep working but getting off the grid might settle in Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Belize, Costa Rica or elsewhere would be greatly appreciated.

I know of at least one disgruntled American in El Salvador. I would suggest Nicaragua as a good place to live and find a community of other disgruntled Americans, plus opportunities to build a business and a life in a burgeoning market where the people are quite friendly.

I have never found Central America to be all that dangerous. In fact, I've had more trouble in the supposedly "civilized" South America than there. Stick to Gringo Trail down the west of the isthmus and I think you'll be okay.

I cannot think of one Central American country that isn't on the North American electrical system, right down to the config of our plugs...I see no need to do anything there.

No one will try to steal your watch, unless you're flaunting a big fancy watch. Use normal care not to put yourself in a situation, and you should be fine.

Hell, bring as much food as you want. People cross borders all the time with shopping they did at the town in the other country.

I think you need to do a little bit of your own research on these questions. Look at a website or two. I can tell you from ten years experience, Central America is a great place, and does not deserve the bad rap it gets in some circles

Good Luck Down There
D

Thanks for all the great information. This is a great website.

I’ve now read that if I intend to drive my car (which is finance with bank), into Mexico I’ll need Mexican auto insurance and also a notarized letter from the finance company giving the ok to leave the us with the vehicle.

Can anyone confirm this?

Will this same arrangement be required for each country? (Insurance from each country and notarized letter)

Thanks again
