Hey, I'm planning on travelling around Australia beginning Jan 2011 on a WHV. I'm thinking of starting looking into flights etc but can't decide where to stopover on the way. It's an opportunity too good to miss to not stop somewhere on the way. I'm struggling to find much online and am thinking of going to STA travel or somewhere to ask advice. Just wondering if anyone could advise me where they're stopping over and why? Or those that have already been where would you recommend? Thanks, Ema x
Hi Ema, im heading over in 6 weeks to Oz.
Me and my mate are stopping over in Thailand, making our own way down via Malaysia and flying from Singapore.
Were going to Thailand cos my mate has family there, but its cheap and nice beaches etc and is maybe an option to look at. Its a popular stop over spot.
I was also in Japan last year and it was amazing so maybe look at that as well.
We booked up in January with Flight centre, they beat any price.
But we went to them, STA and trailfinders and had a chat with them all just for ideas as well. We obv had Thailand in mind but it wasnt 100% at first so still looked at the other options. We found that most of the people working in the shops had done trips like it b4 and had good tips so def a good place to start.
Another tip is do your visa yourself, it takes less than 10 mins to do online and we had an answer back within an hour. STA will try convince you that you need them to do it for you and then charge you stupid money to do it!

That sounds ace, thankyou.. i might look into a similar thing, am doing it alone so obviously a bit worried about anywhere i wouldn't feel safe but would like to do as many places as possible to make it worthwhile. So have you booked your flights separately or as part of 1 trip to Aus? I'm on nights at the mo so will probably go do the rounds like you suggest when i'm awake. And got my visa at the beginning of this week, couldn't believe how hassle free it was. Thanks for your advice x
Yeh, I got a 1 way ticket to Melbourne that included the stop over.
Gonna worry about the return trip later next year, thinking of doing NZ, Fiji, LA, Las Vegas, Miami and home.
Fiji looks so chilled out, so def wanna do that on way home.

Wow, you're trip back home sounds awesome. You travelled like this before? I'm thinking of starting in Melbourne to see some friends and then head to Sydney via Canberra for Mardi Gras in March, then just heading up the East coast to go as many places as possible and follow the sun. Eventually i'll head back down via outback, Uluru and Perth and then money dependant on how much i can do on the way home. I was thinking of heading to New Zealand and Fuji whilst there but will see what turns up. What are your plans? You must be so excited x
Na nothing like this, been all over Europe and a couple of trips to Asia but nothing anywhere near this massive.

The route home does sound good, obv really dependant on money. I have some cash for when we arrive, but will needa earn the money for coming home when over there (unlike my mate, his daddy will bail him out )
We have 15 days booked in a hostel in Melbourne for when we arrive and then hope to find jobs and a flat. Make Melbourne the base and then travel out from there. Same kinda plan as you have, all the tourist spots and find some nice beaches and surf spots inbetween.

We came over last year and stopped over at Hong Kong. Our flight was going via HK anyway and we had the option to specify how many days we wanted to stay there. No extra cost for the flight, we just had to find our accommodation. It was a fantastic place. HK is both manic and tranquil, the smaller islands are beautiful and walking through the markets is an experience in itself. Exploring the city streets at night is like being an extra in the film Blade Runner (if you're old enough to remember it ) We did chicken out and draw the line at some of the food on the street stalls - not really sure what it was but it looked like deep fried tentacle on a stick - we suddenly came over very British Public transport was really cheap, the metro round the city is super efficient and for getting further out the buses are great - but try to have the exact change otherwise the driver may have a hissy-fit. Although a bi-lingual country English is not universal but you can get by with no problem, a smile and some sign language go a long way. And if you're in a shop or looking for something to eat and the proprietor abruptly demands "What you want!" this is just their way of asking "can I get you anything?".
Have fun when you get to Aus. It's a bit wacky, and frustrating and stunning by turns but get out into the bush and watch the sun come up over a hundred kilometres of red dirt and distant mountain tops and you know exactly why you came. Outside of the major cities it's really easy going and friendly and you soon get used to the distances. A five hour drive after work on a Friday night to a campsite, and five hours back again on Sunday night is a normal camping weekend.

I'd recommend stopping over in Japan but I am bias, since I love Tokyo. I will say that stopping over in Japan as one person is far cheaper then doing it with a group and as long as you can get on the train from Narita Airport and make it into Tokyo and find your place to stay you should be fine. There are many wonderful places that can be seen in a day or two layover so think about it.
