Hi I've been trying to find what's the easiest way to get a bank account when travelling in oz, which ones have the most cashpoints? Easiest way to get an account? Can I do it before I leave the uk??
West pack and nab seem to be the most popular has any one had any previous experience with either of these accounts any info will be a great help
Thanks everyone
MAX
I've done minimal research on this, but when looking at the , I think they had a video that gloated having the most access points in Australia.
I also signed up online, just to see the charges and what options were available to me, I planned to quit it before pressing submit right at the end. However I received a phone call the next day from the UK branch, offering me help setting up my account.
You should know that all Australian banks charge to use the service, I don't know about the others, but Commonwealth charge $4 a month.
Hope this helps.
I've not set mine up yet, I've only just started looking into it but NAB seem to do an account with telephone/internet access with no charge (I think) I haven't got into finer details. I was going to look into them more and then decide. I don't really fancy paying a monthly fee but that said I want to go with one that has lots of atms to I don't rack up the charges that way.
I think Internet Banking is the priority for me, and I know the account I 'pretty much' signed up for has this included.
I will do a little more research into which account is best, but all this research just reminds me that I'm not out there yet!
when are you going? It can't be too long if you're looking at banks. For me it's just under 4 weeks
I got 54 days, I make that 7 weeks.
Can't come soon enough!
Actually, it can.. Leaves me 2 paydays to keep saving :P

From experience I would much rather pay a monthly fee for free withdrawals/balance checks etc.
I (like many others) fell for citibank's traveller account which was promoted through STA travel when I went to Oz.
I didn't know about the charges and was shocked to be charged $70 for using mostly Commonwealth and ANZ ATMs
In my opinion ANZ seem to have the most ATMs (definitely where I stayed in Sydney anyway).
Hi
Does the monthly fee mean you can withdraw cash from any atm then?
Hi

Not with Commonwealth at least, the bank account = $4 a month. Withdrawing from another companies ATM = $2 a time.
I can only assume that Citibank had no monthly fee, but an extortionate rate for using an ATM that didn't belong to them?
I think you'll find most banks charge to withdraw at other banks ATMs in Australia. Be careful to read the fine print when you sign up for an account, and make sure you consider how you'll use the account. Some banks offer no monthly transaction fees but the monthly account keeping fees are high, some offer a number of free trasactions and charge a lot for anything over the free limit.
Available ATMs will depend on where you travel, if you're travelling in populated areas any of the major banks will do. Generally I find Commonwealth ATMs are most widespread, and you can use Australia Post outlets to withdraw cash.
