Colombia to Panama

Hi,
anyone travelled by boat from Colombia (Cartagena) to Panama or vice versa.

Yes. I have. Good that you are too

Yes. I have. Good that you are too

well would you like to share with the group
how long did it take, how much did it cost, which company did you travel with, any advice, any bad points to it?

thanks

Ah HAH! Now there's a question! Sure, I'll share.

I didn't travel with a company. There is a cottage industry built up with expats funding their "Jimmy Buffett" lifestyle by shuttling people from Cartagena through the San Blas Islands and on to Colon. The last time I was there, it cost about 300 dollars. That was last year. Another guy who answers questions on another site swears it's five hun...I've told the guy he's high.

The trip took a few days, and no one was rushing. The journey being more important than the destination.

In Cartagena, these "flip flop/pop top" types advertise in all of the hostels in the Getsemani area. You can also go down to the marina and ask folks at the bar. Look for the dudes in the hawaiian shirts, those are your pigeons.

A while ago, an Australian guy asked a similar question, several of us gave him the same advice. Later, he smugly and angrily claimed he went down to the marina and got a passage for the price of buying a guy a beer. While I doubt his story, I concede that it's possible to do this. I lived IN a hostel and heard many people talk about this idea, and never heard one person succeed with the exception of this guy online here. Still, if you're outgoing, it's worth a shot, I suppose

It's time consuming. It costs more than a regular flight. You might not like the other folks you're travelling with. Those are about the only downsides I can see. I suppose sinking and then being eaten by a shark is a potential. I would say it's lowrisk, percentagewise, though.

Good luck. Have fun. Be Safe

I can see I'm going to have to learn an entirely new language.
Oh, and for those wondering about who this Jimmy Buffet character is here you go http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Buffett

Thanks for the info Piecar, it's useful.

Damn, I feel old....Really? Jimmy Buffett rang no bells?

Margaritaville? Seriously?

Pigeons, okay. I get that one.

Jimmy Buffet, nope. He must be a North American phenomenon.
Have you ever heard of Christy Moore?, now he'd be an Irish phenomenon.

Margaritaville, nope.

Pigeons, I think I get it, I could be totally wrong though. :D
