Hello all,
International postage has gone up and up in the last 20 years. I think "extortionate" is probably a standard charge so you might as well pay now as later. Having said that, I would take a serious look at those souvenirs. Are they really worth £47 postage? I have brought back many souvenirs over the years and most go in the cupboard when I get home and never see the light of day again.
You could try a telephone directory, for the address of a shipping company who may be able to send it a lot cheaper than the post office.
I don't recall paying that when I travelled several years ago. Think the most I paid was half that. Having said that 5kg is a lot of post.
However if that was what it cost I would. Think of it this way, you are going to travel for months, possibly even a year. You are probably spending thousands of pounds. Might as well spend that little bit more for the momento's. It's really not a life changing amount in the grand scheme of things.
