Driving from Texas to Cochabamba, Bolivia

My fiancé and I are planning on moving to Cochabamba, Bolivia from Texas, USA after our wedding next year. Since we have two cats and I have found no reliable or comforting information on pet transportation from here to there, we are thinking about driving. I am concerned about making the drive through Mexico since the drug wars seem to be getting worse. Can anyone tell me what I can expect, how long of a drive we are looking at, and good places to stay along the way? ANY information at all would be greatly helpful and appreciated. Also, anyone that might have information about Cochabamba itself. I have gotten mixed results from online searches but overall it looks absolutely stunning.

Congrats on your upcoming wedding! A few things I can speak personally about Cochabamba. I spent a couple of weeks there with a friend who knew the ins and outs, and lots of people, so subsequently I discovered a friendly, safe city. It seemed to be "backpacker" friendly with lots of Internet cafes, etc. And the market is amazing. There is good bus transportation within the city, and it was easy to get down to the jungle and up to La Paz. Unfortunately, I have no lodging recommendations. It seemed to me that it would be very bikable, if you can deal with the traffic and dust.

Now, about that driving trip from Texas to South America. Please search Travellerspoint, your Lonely Planet guide or Google "Darien Gap." I've not been there, but all the reading I've done says it can be dangerous and at times, physically impossible. Most people either leave a car on one side, fly/boat over and buy a car on the other or (and this can be expensive) put a car on a ship and sail down to Columbia or Venezuela.
