Sabah, Malaysian Borneo- On a tour or on our own?

I am planning a 2 week trip to Borneo. We mainly are interested in Sabah- climbing Mt. Kinabalu and visiting the orangutan reserve. Should we book a tour which is inclusive of park fees, guides and accomodation? Is it difficult to make arrangements on your own in this area? Can anyone make some suggestions for other activities? We have considered a homestay program and tree planting, as well.

By climbing Mt. Kinabalu, I assume you are climbing to the top? If thats the case, then you will need to book your accomodation early, particularly at Laban Rata resthouse (google for 'laban rata lodges') prior to coming Sabah. You can arrange your transport easily over most travel agents and its usually a bus or a minivan.. or u could easily rent a car or hire a taxi if you can afford to.

The orang utan reserve is at Sandakan. Most tourists take the plane there and I think its about 1-1.5 hours drive from Sandakan. This can be arranged easily over the travel counter for buses/minivans.

If you are into diving as well, you can do them either at the offshore islands of KK or at Sandakan. The best would be at Tawau, Sipadan island.

So I guess no, you can arrange the tour yourself. Just be wary to bring some cash with you due to 'entrance fees' of the parks.
