travel to Kerala India

I plan to travel to Kerala, India in January and stay for 4 - 6 weeks. I would like to volunteer then travel inexpensively.

You'll obviously be heading to Fort Kochi at some point on your trip. Costa Gama guest house is a cheap nice place and Benson and his family are very welcoming and helpful. Rent a bicycle from him and have a great time riding round the little streets and alleys. If you've been to India before, Karala is nothing like the rest of India. Even the bus drivers speak perfect English and are helpful, and Tuk tuk drivers have cell phones and business cards!

This part of India is a great place to visit.

Whilst I was there I travelled from Trivandum to Goa along the coast with many stop overs on the way up. Everywhere has something slightly different to offer. You should check to see if there are any festivals on during you time in this area as when we where in Allepphey there was the annual snake boat race which was utter chaos but an amazing experience. The atmosphear was extactic and we felt a real part of the whole days festivities.

Kochi is beautiful and taking a boat ride on the back waters is a must see!

Thanks for the suggestions, very helpful. I feel I have a starting point now. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I might be able to help you find volunteering jobs in Kerala. Maybe you can teach children or assist in some community development programmes etc. Please let me know what you can offer to do.
