I live in Auckland and have been to Christchurch once. I dont really know about fruit picking jobs in Auckland but you could check the website www.seek.co.nz or in the newspapers when you get here. Auckland is huge so it depends which part you come to.

thanks! i was just wanting to know which city is a friendlier place to a new arrival like me. no doubt i will have to move away from the cities to looks for jobs in the rural areas....

Everyone in New Zealand is pretty much friendly no matter where you go
Both are friendly, as is pretty much everywhere in NZ. Personally, I would think Christchurch would be a bit more interesting coming from Malaysia as Central Auckland is architecturally pretty similar to big cities in other developed countries, whereas Christchurch has a quite different feel to it.
Suggest you fly into Chch and make for either Central Otago, or Marlborough area. There are cheap flights chch to queenstown. Central Otago is absolutely stunning and very varied. Alexandra is a good centre for jobs there. Masses of orchards and vineyards. Fruit picking is hard work!
